New WordPress website

I am now as a learning exercise hosting my own WordPress website, so if you are interested then have a look at vrctech.net.

All the content from this website has been moved over to the new one, and in time I hope to do a bit of customisation etc with the new website. So, unless something bad happens there will be no new posts here.

Password Managers

I have been using Revelation password manager for the past 4 years and have found it to be reliable, simple and easy to use and install. I have though, way too many passwords to try and keep track of that when I boot up into another OS or computer I just want to open the latest password file and have the passwords there. Having a portable app on a usb stick so I can have my passwords with me whereever I go would be nice. For me the shortcomings of Revelation are -

  1. There has been no development on it since 2007, while everything may work now, for how much longer will that be the case ?
  2. It is not cross platform, I dual boot between Windows 7 / Linux.
  3. Exporting the password list to various other password programs did not work for me.
  4. It’s not portable.

So today I have started a search to try and find a replacement. Using Google, the one program that keeps coming up is KeePass. I was looking for the following features, listed in the order of importance -

  1. Cross plateform
  2. Easy installation ( preferably in repo’s)
  3. Easy to use.
  4. Still in active development (Open Source)
  5. Can be run from a USB stick (bonus)

The most important feature is cross platform, Looking at the KeePass website it seems to run on anything imaginable from hand held devices to desktop/laptops with all the major  operating systems. After my experimentation today in Debain, KeePassX (version 0.4.3) everything seems to be good, just as easy as Revelation once you go through the options and get it setup the way you want. It’s in the Debian Repo’s so it couldn’t be easier to install. In Windows just download and install, (use the 1.18 version) open the database file created in Debian, enter password, and thats it. In both Os’s when you click the URL associated with the secret the default web browser opens, which is basically all I want. Also the portable app seems to work much the same way in Debian with Wine.

KeePass version 2 works with Mono, but it seemed to me a bit buggy, woudn’t open web browser, couldn’t resize windows, and since there is a native one for Linux I went with that, which also dictated the version for Windows and to keep it simple the one on the USB stick. KeePassX is under development being re-writen from scratch so when version 2 comes out for Linux I will probable upgrade but until then version 1 seems to be working fine.

So, what are your thoughts on password managers, is there a better one out there that you have come across, if so, please leave a comment.

Plymouth on Debian Squeeze

Debian LogoI have been having a look at the Debian Forums and have come across  an excellent How to for getting Plymouth installed and working.

In case you are wondering what Plymouth is, here is definition from Wikipedia

Plymouth is a bootsplash for Linux. It supports animations. It makes use of Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) and kernel-based mode-setting (KMS). It gets packed into the initrd

In layman’s terms, when Debian starts up, you will end up looking at graphics instead of text scrolling by.

I have moved to Debian 6

Why the move ?

Several reasons, and in no particular order

  1. Try something new.
  2. Not sure about the upcoming new desktop technology that is coming out(Unity & Gnome 3), I figure if my Debian install last for the next 2 years all the bugs in the new desktops will be ironed out by the time I shall have to change.
  3. Debian seems a lot more usable (more modern) than it was 2 years ago. When I compared Debian 5 to Ubuntu 9.10 2 years ago.

So far all is going great at the moment. I have most of my favourite applications installed and working fine.

Gamer Completes Quake Under 1 Hour @ 100%

Wow, this has to be seen to be believed. I loved this game when it came out and I still have the CD’s and the expansion packs. I had this working in Linux about 2 years ago and it wasn’t that difficult to get going. I did actually begin to write a how-to on the subject, but as usual I got side tracked, once I pass my exams I shall have to have a go at finishing it.

If you have a spare hour, you can watch this guy kill everything that moves and get all the secrets.

Smooth fonts in Debian 6

I have just updated my how-to collection. I have been so impressed with Debian 6 I just had to fix the one thing bugging me, and that was the crappy fonts in Iceweasel and to a lesser extent the desktop itself. A bit of searching around and I have come across a good easy to implement solution.  While the fonts are not as good as say Ubuntu, I reckon they are close. Let me know what you think.

Debian 6 Review

Hello 2011.

Feeling a bit worse for wear and with not having much to do I thought I would give Debian 6 aka Squeeze a go. Squeeze is at Beta 2 status and in deep freeze so I suspect not much will change between now and the official release which should happen soon. I found and downloaded a net install CD,  backed up my old Debian 5 (Lenny) installation and commenced a new installation in it’s place.

All I can say is wow. This is a big jump up from Lenny. The desktop looks and feels a lot better, much closer to Ubuntu. The fonts are not as smooth as Ubuntu, but certainly no where near as bad as what they where in Lenny.

I have also found GDebi is installed by default, this has got to be good, the last time I had to jump through some hoops to get that working. Below I will list some program versions so you can get an idea about how old / new the programs are -

  • Gnome 2.30.2
  • Iceweasel (Firefox) 3.5.16
  • Gimp 2.6.10
  • Openoffice 3.2.1

It hasn’t taken me too long to get this new system up and running with all my usual favorite programs and settings. Like I said before, Squeeze seems to be more complete and ready for the desktop so I encourage anyone interested in Debian to have a go. I have updated my Basic How-to for this release which will get all the basics in place for you, it’s in the How-to section named My Ideal Debian 6 setup.
