I have been using Revelation password manager for the past 4 years and have found it to be reliable, simple and easy to use and install. I have though, way too many passwords to try and keep track of that when I boot up into another OS or computer I just want to open the latest password file and have the passwords there. Having a portable app on a usb stick so I can have my passwords with me whereever I go would be nice. For me the shortcomings of Revelation are -
- There has been no development on it since 2007, while everything may work now, for how much longer will that be the case ?
- It is not cross platform, I dual boot between Windows 7 / Linux.
- Exporting the password list to various other password programs did not work for me.
- It’s not portable.
So today I have started a search to try and find a replacement. Using Google, the one program that keeps coming up is KeePass. I was looking for the following features, listed in the order of importance -
- Cross plateform
- Easy installation ( preferably in repo’s)
- Easy to use.
- Still in active development (Open Source)
- Can be run from a USB stick (bonus)
The most important feature is cross platform, Looking at the KeePass website it seems to run on anything imaginable from hand held devices to desktop/laptops with all the major operating systems. After my experimentation today in Debain, KeePassX (version 0.4.3) everything seems to be good, just as easy as Revelation once you go through the options and get it setup the way you want. It’s in the Debian Repo’s so it couldn’t be easier to install. In Windows just download and install, (use the 1.18 version) open the database file created in Debian, enter password, and thats it. In both Os’s when you click the URL associated with the secret the default web browser opens, which is basically all I want. Also the portable app seems to work much the same way in Debian with Wine.
KeePass version 2 works with Mono, but it seemed to me a bit buggy, woudn’t open web browser, couldn’t resize windows, and since there is a native one for Linux I went with that, which also dictated the version for Windows and to keep it simple the one on the USB stick. KeePassX is under development being re-writen from scratch so when version 2 comes out for Linux I will probable upgrade but until then version 1 seems to be working fine.
So, what are your thoughts on password managers, is there a better one out there that you have come across, if so, please leave a comment.
